"I think what Will has put together is fantastic. This is certainly going to be a very challenging venture and he and his friends are going to need to be very fit and determined to achieve their ambitious goals. I wish them all the best of luck". Nick Easter, CRY patron
The Summer of 2009 met the start of the Spatula Challenge when two people at Wellington College set of towards Fort William in the car, with bikes and mountain kit in the back, in order to begin the climb up Ben Nevis and the cycle on towards Wales the following day.
Altogether we aimed to raise a total of £10 000 in sponsorship, but we did infact raise a total of £20 000 for two fantastic charities. These were Cardiac Risk in the Young and Holidays4Heroes
Please use the links below to donate.
We finished the challenge after 9 1/2 days of continuous cycling and walking at lunch time on Thursday 16 July - It really was a charitable challenge never to be forgotten.
What?
The spatula Challenge saw William (14) and Georgina (16) climb the 3 Peaks, the highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales, in succession whilst also cycling 443 miles in between.
The mountains:
Ben Nevis (1344m)
Scafell Pike (978m)
Snowdon (1085m)
Why?
There were many reasons that drove us to endure and complete the 3 Peaks by Bike. The main one of which, of course, was doing something amazing for charity. It really was all the very generous donations from so many family and friends that inspired us to complete the challenge.
The other motives were to feel the sense of achievement after each peak, to find out about ourselves eg. whether we were as strong as we think and whether we really would successfully endure everything that we were faced with cheerful and whole hearted enthusiasim! Ho hum........
Why the name?
Some people will have seen the movie 'Run Fat Boy Run'. In this movie a spatula is used for motivation by the assistant coach...... and believe it or not...... it worked!......
Help!
We need your kind help to give these two organisations a little boost - every single penny helps. Although supporting two complicates things a little they are both terrific organisations. We chose CRY in memory of our neighbour, Sebastian English who tragically died at 15 as a result of an undiagnosed heart condition, read more here. We also chose Holidays4heroes because we wanted to help this small organisation that in turn helps injured servicemen, bereaved families and those struggling to cope after their service, often because of conditions like Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, (PTSD). Read more here and follow the link to donate through The Bulldog Trust.
Even though the challenge is over these charities still need your help and if you do not want to sponsor over the internet get more details by emailing myself at:
